This manuscript should support the course. It is intended as an aid and also as a short glossary. The index should help to find formally some questions (and hopefully also the answers) which could be used for the exams. 1 |

Geostatistics is a relatively young branch of statistics, which
considers applications of statistical methods in geosciences.
Quantitative analyses of this kind are also applied in modern
disciplines as environmental protection, spatial planning, geodesy, etc.
Therefore, instead of ``Geostatistics'' we better should use the
expression ``Statistical Analysis of Spatial Data''.
The subject ``Geostatistics'' is doubtless connected with the name of G. Matheron, statistician of Fontainebleau in France. He founded some 30 years ago the theory of this scientific branch. A basic book was written in 1978 by Journel and Huijbregts which, however, is not so easy to read by applied people.
The present manuscript has been written after intensive studies of this book and other literature, where from also many ideas and examples come. The starting application was a course on ``Mathematical Methods in Mining Geology'' given several years at the University of Leoben. Deep theoretical treatments are avoided, the reader should only get acquainted with some selected useful application in a short time period. For further studies we give references.
Many suggestions for the text came from several unpublished manuscripts by H. Siemes from Aachen, A.G. Royle from Leeds, and J.-M. Rendu from Johannesburg. The initial work was enabled through the invited course in Leoben, for which I like to thank very much the professors W.J. Schmidt and W. Imrich. Much motivation and suggestions were obtained through discussions with R. Sinding-Larson and H. Omre from Norway as well as with D. François-Bongarçon from Fontainebleau.
If my course and also this booklet shows application oriented tendencies then it is because of the fruitful cooperation with the Research Society Joanneum. Here I would especially like to thank Dr. M. Vinzenz for his active cowork in respect to the case studies, his geological consulting and implementation of computer programs some 20 years ago.
An early version of this manuscript in form of a booklet in German was published with the intense help of O.Univ.-Prof. Dr. Harald Strelec who I would like to thank sincerely.
