Properties of the Variogram

The definition of the variogram as the variance of increments entails the following properties:

/begin{displaymath}/gamma({/boma 0}) = 0, / / /gamma({/boma h}) = /gamma(-{/boma h}) /geq 0./end{displaymath}

In general, but not always, as h increases, the mean quadratic deviation between the two variables $Z({/boma x})$ and $Z({/boma x}+{/boma h})$ tends to increase and so $/gamma({/boma h})$ increases from its initial zero value.
